The title of the profession known as ‘Planning’ may be somewhat
misleading.
Certainly Town Planning involves consideration of the future but the act of planning is actually done by citizens, elected officials, regulation and necessity. Civilization has always ‘planned’; whether in the form of meticulously erected monuments to hasty mining camps, one individual’s actions affect the whole. This means that individuals actually hold the reins of Town Planning. Only the people of Palisade can take the lead in planning what this town will be twenty five and fifty years from now. As the Town Planner, my job is to coordinate, inform, speculate, dream and assist.
Any place inhabited by people is destined to change. Those changes can take place fast or slow, and be good or bad. As a Town Planner, it is my objective that those changes, even the minor ones, are done in a way to improve the Town’s functionality, appearance, economy, and livability. No one person can decide how a town will change, but through State Statute and Municipal Ordinances, the Town of Palisade has set certain benchmarks that proposed development does have to meet. Using those statutes and ordinances to enact zoning and land development codes is how a municipality and its inhabitants can comfortably anticipate that changes will all be for the better.
Also helping Palisade steer toward a better future is the dedicated efforts of the Palisade Planning Commission. These six dedicated individuals consider staff input, testimony and other factors in order to decide on development proposals or make recommendations to the Town Board. The Planning Commission meets on the Wednesday which follows the first Town Board meeting of the month (usually the second Wednesday of the month) in the town council chambers at 120 West 8th Street at 7:00 (the Community Center). Feel free to stop by to voice your concerns and or ideas!
The wellbeing of the Town is a responsibility that we all share. The best places are always the result of a community effort.
